Building an FT-891 Field Rig with Raspberry PI computer. I wanted to build a “Go Kit” for field activation using both HF voice and digital modes. I also wanted it to be compact and fit in a backpack with battery power or a small case. For the HF rig I selected the YAESU FT-891 radio for its size and quality. MacLoggerDX - the Mac Ham Radio Logbook choice in 130 countries. Organizing and filtering the spots from your favourite DX Cluster for DXing, casual Contesting or rag-chewing. RT Systems ADMS-891 Programming software makes it easy to manage memory channel information and other menu settings of the Yaesu FT-891. Spreadsheet layout with many point and click options. ’ Read’ the current configuration from the radio for editing or start from scratch in a new file.
So as a proud owner of a Yaesu FT-891, I was excited to get it on the air for digital modes. However, there is little documentation out there on how to accomplish this. Additionally, the 891 is sort of in the middle of its Yaesu brethren – has USB CAT control unlike the 897/857/100, but not a full sound card like the 991/991A. Additionally, I was not able to find ANY documentation on how to set it up with FLDIGI (note – FLDIGI does not have a XML file for the 891. I’ll be setting it up to work with FLRIG and you can go from there.)
Qualitek 4 keygen free download. A couple of give-ins:
*You have to install the Yaesu drivers before doing ANY of this. Again, let me repeat – no working drivers, no success. Go to Yaesu’s website and follow their instructions. When they’re installed in working, go to your Device Manager and check to see that you have two COM devices:
*You’re going to have to get audio to and from the rig. The biggest letdown of the FT-891 (there are a couple, but I still give this rig a great rating) is that the USB port doesn’t double as a sound card. The best solution is to get a breakout cable that takes the audio in/out from the DATA jack and gives you two 3.5mm audio jacks. From there you can plug them into the respective audio jacks on your computer. Unfortunately, my laptop has a TRRS plug for audio. I could just get a Y cable and be done with it, but I do like the idea of having two sound cards (built in and secondary) to separate computer sounds from radio audio (you don’t want the audio from YouTube going over the air) so I spent $10 and got a USB sound card. It’s basically just a USB port with audio IN/OUT, but works great for our purposes.
So, you got the drivers working (right?) and you’ve got the audio piped into your computer and vice versa. Now what? Lets get a USB cable connected. You’re going to need a cable with a Type A and B connector. Type A is the standard rectangular one you find on your computer. Type B is shaped like a house with a flat roof, or maybe hexagonal. It’s not mini or micro. If you turn your 891 around you’ll see what I mean.
You’ll also need to install FLRIG. The basics on how it works can be found at www.w1hkj.com/flrig-help/ and you can download it from https://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/
Once the application is installed you can go ahead and start it. Now we need to make some changes to the settings on the FT-891 so it will communicate with FLRIG. I want to thank Jay N1RWY for his work on the 991 that helped me get this going. You can find his original work at www.n1rwy.org/?p=157 .
Alright – time to make some changes to the radio. Go ahead and go to the menu and make the following adjustments:
05-06 CAT RATE 4800
05-07 CAT TOT 100ms
05-08 CAT RTS Enable
07-11 CW FREQ DISPLAY DIRECT FREQ (not sure on this – just following N1RWY’s instructions)
062 Data Mode OTHERS (NOT PSK – change to OTHERS)
07-12 PC KEYING – RTS
08-03 OTHER DISP (SSB) = 1500 KHz
08-04 OTHER SHIFT (SSB) = 1500 KHz This widens the audio bandwidth
08-05 DATA LCUT FRED = OFF
08-07 DATA HCUT FREQ = OFF
08-09 DATA IN SELECT = REAR
08-10 DATA PTT SELECT = RTS
08-12 DATA BFO – USB
16-14 DATA GAIN – 5 (however you can adjust this once FLDIGI is working to meet your needs)
If you find some different settings that work or are an improvement, please post in the comments and I can always update this.
Next you can fire up FLRIG and make some changes there I’ll just post the screen shot with highlights because I’m lazy:
CONFIG > SETUP > TRANSCEIVER
Note – COM3 is the port my computer (An HP laptop running Windows 10) assigns the ENHANCED driver. The standard driver is COM4. You will want to use the ENHANCED driver for this. Go to your Device Manager to confirm what COM port is assigned to what driver (usually the ENHANCED driver is assigned the lower of the two and they are sequential)Yaesu
Once you click on <INIT> the application should update and pull the current frequency from the VFO and display it on the FLRIG virtual VFO. Cheats for assassins black flag. From there everything should be self-explanatory. I’ll leave the linking of FLDIGI and FLRIG to the documentation provided with both apps.Mac Software For Yaesu Ft 891 Advanced Manual
